What the open-source AI game-modding toolkit is, how to install it, and what it will and won't do — written from the official docs, not by the project.

Read the official repository on GitHubWhat is universal modder?
Universal Modder is an open-source (MIT license) toolkit of skills, command-line tools and a shared knowledge base that lets AI coding agents — the README lists Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode — create mods for PC games you own. It ships in Agent Skills format, with a Python CLI called um and an MCP server for the fal asset-generation service.
The agent follows a fixed loop every time: search the knowledge base for prior field notes, recon the game to fingerprint its engine and version, set up a safe lab with save files backed up, read the actual game code, build one working slice, generate art / 3D / sound assets, verify the mod inside the real running game, then record a field note so the next agent starts where it left off.
The toolkit ships 12 engine playbooks covering Unity, Unreal, .NET/XNA (Terraria, Stardew Valley, Celeste), Godot, Source 1/2, Bethesda titles, Minecraft, AoE2/Genie, RE Engine / FromSoft / GTA / Cyberpunk / BG3, native C++, indie engines (GameMaker, RPG Maker, Ren'Py, Paradox, Doom, HTML5, LÖVE, Java) and retro decompilations. So real coverage depends on the engine and on prior field notes — treat "mod almost any PC game" as the project's ambition, not a tested guarantee for your specific game.
The project states hard limits itself: it refuses to inject into online games with anti-cheat, will not write cheats against other players or bypass anti-cheat, DRM or ownership checks, never ships game files or decompiled code, backs up saves before touching them, and asks before driving your mouse and keyboard, installing loaders, or publishing anything.
How to install Universal Modder for your AI coding agent
- Claude Code: run /plugin marketplace add rehan-remade/universal-modder, then /plugin install universal-modder@universal-modder.
- Codex: run codex plugin marketplace add rehan-remade/universal-modder, then codex plugin add universal-modder@universal-modder.
- Gemini CLI: run gemini extensions install https://github.com/rehan-remade/universal-modder.
- VS Code / Copilot: enable chat.plugins.enabled, run "Chat: Install Plugin From Source", and enter the repository URL.
- Cursor: install from the Cursor Marketplace, or clone the repo (Cursor reads its AGENTS.md and .cursor/mcp.json). OpenCode: clone and run opencode inside it — on OpenCode 2 you can instead run opencode plugin add 'github:rehan-remade/universal-modder#main::path:plugins/opencode'.
- Any other agent: clone https://github.com/rehan-remade/universal-modder and start your agent inside it, or install skills only with npx skills add https://github.com/rehan-remade/universal-modder.
- To get the um CLI on PATH anywhere: uv tool install git+https://github.com/rehan-remade/universal-modder (or pipx install the same URL).
- Confirm the prerequisites before your first run: Git, Python 3.10+ and ffmpeg (uv is the recommended installer); Blender is only needed for 3D-to-sprite renders; Windows games are driven natively or from WSL.
Requirements and costs — read before you start
- AI asset generation (sprites, 3D models, sound, video) runs through fal and needs a fal API key, which is a separate paid service; set FAL_KEY to use the fal MCP server or um fal.
- Without a fal key, um comfy can still generate images from a local ComfyUI server — no API key needed for that path.
- The um CLI requires Python 3.10+, plus Git and ffmpeg on your system; uv is the recommended way to install it.
- Blender is required only for um render3d, which renders 3D models into engine-exact sprite frames.
- Windows games are driven natively or from WSL; two bundled PowerShell tools (WinDrive input and ProcLoopback game-only audio) ship ready to run with no build step.
Limits and safety rules
- Intended scope is games you own: single-player, multiplayer, or servers you host. The toolkit's stated rules refuse to inject into online games with anti-cheat.
- It will not write cheats against other players or bypass anti-cheat, DRM or ownership checks.
- Mods ship as code, your own assets, patches or converters — never game files or decompiled code; um publish check blocks shipping those.
- Saves are backed up before modification, and processes are killed by PID only.
- The agent asks first before driving your mouse and keyboard, installing loaders into game folders, or publishing (pull requests included).
universal modder FAQ
Is Universal Modder free?
The toolkit itself is open source under the MIT license and free to use. Asset generation through fal requires a fal API key, which is a separate paid service; generating images with a local ComfyUI server via um comfy needs no API key.
Which AI coding agents does it work with?
According to the official README: Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode, plus any agent that can load Agent Skills (via npx skills add) or work inside a git clone.
Does it really work with almost any PC game?
"Mod almost any PC game you own" is the project's own tagline. In practice, support depends on the 12 shipped engine playbooks and on field notes in the knowledge base from previous mods — check the knowledge base for your specific game and engine before starting.
Will using it get me banned in online games?
The toolkit's own rules refuse to inject into online games that have anti-cheat and forbid bypassing anti-cheat entirely. Its intended scope is single-player games you own, multiplayer you play casually, or servers you host.
Do I need to know how to code to use it?
No — the AI agent does the coding, reverse engineering and asset work. You need the prerequisites on your machine (Git, Python 3.10+, ffmpeg, and a fal API key if you want AI-generated art), plus the game installed.
